Week of 10/8

We have started work on our new unit of inquiry: Power, authority and action create changes in an organization.

We looked at maps and identified places that helped people in the community. We will explore the role of government in providing services.

We listed what we know about power an authority in different places and what we are wondering about.

Math

We are beginning to explore multiplication.

We listed things that come in groups or multiples.

We helped fourth grade students gather data to construct graphs.

We practiced addition and subtraction when we played the game " More".

We took a timed test in addition and subtraction.  We are using strategies and practice to get faster.  Keep practicing at home.

We are balanced.  We did yoga on Tuesday.

8/10-8/14

We have been busy this week.

Thank you to everyone who donated money for the gift basket.  We are all looking forward to the One World Fundraiser.  Hope you can join us!

We are going to the zoo on Monday.  Please make sure to dress for the weather.

Take a look at what we have bee up to this week.  We are working on our inquiry into how the world works.  Our central idea is:

Changes in matter can lead to challenges and benefits for society and the environment.

We have been exploring the properties of  each state of matter and will begin to study both physical and chemical changes in matter this week.  Take some time to identify things around them as solid, liquid or guess.  Talk about the changes matter can go through.  You may also want to work with your child on identifying sources of energy.  They may also want to start thinking  and inquiring about the benefits of changes in matter.

We get to know each other at morning meeting and find out what we have in common.

We talk about what we are reading.

We work on writing.

8/27 - 8/31

We have had another great week.  Check out what is going on in third grade.

We continue to read  and write everyday as we build stamina- students are reading and writing for longer and longer periods of time.

We are beginning our inquiry into matter and energy.

Our questions about the world lead to our investigation of matter.

Observing and recording the properties of a liquid.

More observing... how does liquid move?

Students decide to conduct  a weight test.  Discovering mass.
We work together and independently.

Illustrating our Essential Agreements and working together.

We write in "Wonder Journals"-  asking questions and making connections.

Working with tangrams in math.

Working and wondering all day!
